More Seger show reviews:
COLUMBUS, OH: Opening for Seger was
Mississippi-based Steve Azar. Though he's a
good generation younger than Seger (and most
of the audience), his sound grows from the
same well-watered roots: a good helping of
blues, some up-tempo country and a little
bit of folk, all set to a solid rock beat.
Azar has the inflections and rhythms of a
young Bob Dylan, and he shifted deftly
between acoustic and electric guitars. He
passed the crucial test for an opening act:
He held the attention of people who had
never heard of him.
LEXINGTON, KY: Mississippi country
singer Steve Azar opened the evening with
energetic and highly contemporary songs ripe
with lush keyboards, twin guitars and
congas. Needless to say, resulting songs
like Waitin' On Joe and Crowded borrowed
more from the Seger school roadhouse rock
and than any obvious country inspiration.

The reviews
are pouring in:
Opening was Mississippi singer-songwriter
Steve Azar, who seduced the impatient crowd
impressively by managing to simultaneously
channel such disparate influences as Alan
Jackson and Sonny Landreth.

opener for Seger, with a
tight set, his retro, James

Not just
a country boy
But Steve Azar is part of the Country Music
Christmas Tour, coming Sunday to the Embassy
By Cindy Larson
clarson@news-sentinel.com
Steve Azar
may have gotten his big break as a musician
in Nashville, but you won’t get away with
labeling him as a country artist.
His heart
belongs at home in the Mississippi Delta,
the inspiration for his soon-to-be-released
new CD, “Indianola.”
Azar and
four other “country” acts will be at the
Embassy Theatre on Sunday as part of Great
American Country’s Country Music Christmas
Tour.
He doesn’t
reject the country label — however, “when
you say the word ‘country,’ it’s that and a
lot more,” Azar said, speaking by cell phone
from Cape Girardeau, Mo., one of the stops
on the tour. “The truth is I’m just much
more Delta rock blues.”

GAC Tour Brings Azar to Lovett
By John Wright The Paducah Sun
At first
mention of this weekend’s western Kentucky
stop on the GAC Country Music Christmas
Tour, singer/songwriter Steve Azar’s
attention shifts to a close friend in the
music business.
“Yep,
that’s Larry Stewart’s area,” said Azar,
referring to the
Paducah native and lead singer
for Restless Heart. “I absolutely love Larry
and his family. In fact, I was just talking
to him the other day. The only thing is, we
don’t actually get to see each other too
much these days.”
Along
with the GAC tour — 7:30 p.m. Sunday at
Lovett Auditorium in Murray — and running
his own record company (producing his new
“Indianola” album in early 2007), Azar is
the opening act for Bob Seger and the Silver
Bullet Band, one of his all-time favorites.
“Being
on tour with Bob has been the nicest thing
that has ever happened to me (in music),”
Azar said, adding that the experience has
revealed some things about the 2004 Rock ’n’
Roll Hall of Fame inductee, now 61. “I can
tell you one of the big reasons Bob has had
such staying power. It’s because he’s so
gracious. He’s one of the nicest guys in the
business, and I can’t thank him enough for
this.
“And you
know, from hearing him the last several
nights, I don’t think he’s sounded better,
either. He’s really taken good care of
himself over the years.”
Azar
might be a good match for the fiery Seger.
Azar was known in the South for his
high-energy stage approach before entering
the country charts in 2004 with “I Don’t
Have to Be Me ’Til Monday” and the smash
video for “Waitin’ on Joe,” featuring
Academy Award-winner Morgan Freeman.
Azar and
his band also were headliners for several
years at the New Year’s Eve celebration in
Memphis, Tenn., before 70,000 people
on the riverfront.
Born in
Clarksdale, Miss., Azar comes from an area
almost as well known for singers — Conway
Twitty, Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters, Charley
Pride — as it is for cotton.
“It was
so neat to grow up there just hearing these
guys. In fact, my mother (who ran a grocery
store in Clarksdale) said she could remember
when Charley would come in there to get a
drink after playing baseball,” Azar said.
Azar
also lists Mississippi blues men Albert King
and Lil’ Milton as major influences.
“But it
was what these guys did for the people down
there through their music. You know,
Mississippi wasn’t an economic mecca, and
still isn’t, but that music just has a way
of making you feel better about things.”
Azar
will be joined Sunday at Murray by Julie
Roberts (”Break Down Here” and “Girl Next
Door”), the duo Blue
County (”Good Little Girls”) and Deanna Carter, best known for “Strawberry
Wine” and “Did I Shave My Legs for This?”
Bucky
Covington,
who advanced to the finals of “American
Idol” last year, also will appear as a
replacement for Buddy Jewell, who is missing
the tour after breaking his wrist in a home
accident.
Tickets
for the show are $24 each at the MSU box
office in the
Regional Special
Events Center or by phoning
877-894-4474.

Rock
and Roll Never Forgets...........
Hit
maker Steve Azar will join legendary rocker
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band on the
road throughout the month of November.
With his soulful, bluesy voice, Azar
delivers a high-energy, crowd pleasing,
performance every night for his fans. He is
a seasoned performer with undeniable
charisma as well as a very talented and
prolific songwriter. He penned two of his
biggest hits, gaining national attention
with songs like “I Don’t Have to Be Me (‘Til
Monday)” and “Waitin’ On Joe,” which
produced a #1 video featuring Academy
Award-winning actor, Morgan Freeman.
Seger is universally acknowledged as having
one of the few truly defining voices of
American music. Throughout his career, Seger
has sold nearly 50 million albums to date,
and has taken song after song up the music
charts including “Against The Wind,” “Turn
The Page,” “Night Moves,” “Old Time Rock and
Roll,” and “Beautiful Loser.” In September
2006, Seger released his first cd in eleven
years "Face The Promise" which debuted on
the Billboard 200 album chart at #4.
“We are thrilled for Steve to be chosen for
such a coveted slot on one of the most
anticipated tours in years. Bob Seger fans
are in for an incredible night of music,”
says Azar’s agent Darin Murphy of Creative
Artists Agency (CAA).
"I have been a fan of Bob Seger and the
Silver Bullet Band's music for years,”
explains Azar. “In fact, I think that Bob is
probably one of the best singer/songwriters
of all time. His authentic and distinct
style of music always seems to appeal to the
masses - not just one music genre and that
has always inspired me. This is an exciting
opportunity for me, to say the least."
Azar will release a new album early next
year called Indianola. The debut single,
“You Don’t Know A Thing,” is Azar’s latest
hit, with the video airing on CMT and GAC
video networks.
On The Run, Exxon and Mobil continue to
serve as sponsors for Azar’s 2006 tour
dates.
